Blue Star Memorial Marker
The Blue Star Memorial Marker Program honors service men and women who have served, are serving or will be serving in the armed services of the United States. This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs (now National Garden Clubs, Inc.) adopted the program started in New Jersey and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the United States. A large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was placed at appropriate locations along the way. In 2012 a Blue Star Memorial Marker was installed in the 400 block of Terry Parkway, Terrytown, LA. Just in time for Veteran's Day, members of the garden club gathered there on November 5, 2019, to beautify the area in front of the marker. We were fortunate to have 3 employees of the Jefferson Parish Parkways Department assist us in working up the ground and with the planting. Thanks to Joan DeMille for her design and for heading up the committee and to Patricia Ortalano for organizing the project. Other members who came out to help with the planting were Marlene Alvarez, Donna Cline, Jeanette Heine and Reba Mackey. |
